The Painted Turtle Camp is located on a 160-acre site near Lake Hughes, California. The camp will serve young people with a variety of chronic diseases, and is part of a network of facilities administered by a foundation started by actor Paul Newman. The camp will include a total of 32 new buildings on the site, including cabins, staff housing units, arts buildings, a dining hall, gymnasium, boathouse, and a medical clinic. The project involves a number of complex civil engineering challenges as well as numerous entitlement issues related to the hillside site adjacent to the San Andreas Fault.
